Intended Audience
This continuing education activity is designed for oncology nurses and other health care providers interested in the care of oncology patients.
 
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants should be better able to
  • Explain the underlying principles of radiobiology by understanding how radiation works to kill cancer cells
  • Define terminology utilized in radiation oncology
  • Explain different radiation modalities and the clinical applications (tumor types)
  • Apply their knowledge to clinical nursing practice when teaching patients about radiation treatments
 
Rationale and Purpose
The overall purpose of this activity is to provide an overview of the principles of radiation therapy, the variety of radiation treatment modalities, and clinical applications of each. The majority of cancer patients will receive some form of radiation during their continuum of care. Therefore, it is important for all oncology nurses to have a basic understanding of radiation therapy.
